I got your setlist right here…

Shortish concert reviews (and setlists, whenever possible)

Jeff Tweedy — 7/8/11, Fish Creek, WI (Door Community Auditorium)

with one comment

It’s late, and a long day and night of driving awaits tomorrow (er, today), so I’ll keep it short. But suffice it to say that after a nice day of walking around the charming village of Fish Creek — the de facto capital of the Door County region — and experiencing the local tradition of a fish boil, it was a pleasure to retreat indoors and listen to Mr. Tweedy play some music for about an hour and 45 minutes.

And there were quite a few treats in that time, including four songs from the forthcoming Wilco record, “The Whole Love,” with “Dawned On Me” making its live solo debut. A couple of songs from the last Wilco full length, “Deeper Down” and “Bull Black Nova,” also got very rare solo treatments. The latter was a revelation to close out the main set, with the frenetic urgency of the full-band version replaced by a spooky, almost ethereal, feel as a solo acoustic number.

Other highlights for me included “Not For The Season” and “Gun,” the latter mysteriously dedicated to an “Ed with three Ds.” Perhaps the only disappointments in the show were a lack of covers — The Handsome Family’s “So Much Wine” was on the setlist as a possible option, but didn’t get played — and only one Summerteeth song in a place that evoked such a strong summertime feeling.

But those are relatively minor quibbles on my part. It was ultimately a treat to be able to make the trip up to a part of the world I hadn’t previously visited. Add the fact that I saw so many familiar faces at the show and got to spend time with some friends I don’t get to see all that often (as well as some that I do), and I couldn’t ask for much more from a Friday in July. Judging by Jeff’s relaxed demeanor, which included quite a bit of banter about American Idol and a brief J-Lo impression, he probably couldn’t either.

Here was the complete setlist, as played:

Spiders (Kidsmoke)
Remember The Mountain Bed
Muzzle Of Bees
Open Mind
Deeper Down
One Wing
I’ll Fight
I Might
The Ruling Class
Not For The Season
Pecan Pie
Born Alone
Jesus, etc.
Bull Black Nova
The Late Greats
I’m The Man Who Loves You
Dawned On Me
Passenger Side
Heavy Metal Drummer
A Shot in the Arm
Walken (performed at edge of stage w/o PA system)
Acuff-Rose (performed at edge of stage w/o PA system)

*there was no opening act for this show

  1. Interesting you didn’t mention his “banter” about the familiar faces in the first row. And his apologies to the people of Fish Creek about the fans who follow him. I believe he guessed one fan has been to 10,000 shows.

Anyway, the whole weekend was a delight. Thanks to Tweedy and my teacher’s schedule for getting me to visit Fish Creek, WI, a location I certainly would not have otherwise experienced.
