Wilco — 6/25/11, North Adams, MA (Mass MoCA)

Another heavy rainstorm slightly delayed the start of Wilco’s second set at the Solid Sound Festival, but ultimately the skies cleared with plenty of time for the band to play a 27-song set that featured just two repeated songs from the previous evening’s performance.

The show kicked off with a neat rendition of Nick Lowe’s “I Love My Label,” the B-side to the recently released first single, “I Might,” from the band’s forthcoming record. Then came the first of two live debuts of new songs, “Dawned On Me,” which had been on the setlist for Friday night’s show but apparently got cut for time reasons. (Later in the set, we heard another new song, the title of which I can only guess at for now. So excuse me if I’m way off.)

If the new songs we’ve heard thus far are any indication, the new Wilco record is definitely going to be more upbeat than recent efforts. The arrangements seem to be a bit more riff-heavy and melodic. Clearly the songs the band has chosen to play thus far lean toward the “snot-nosed, obnoxious pop songs” end of how Jeff Tweedy has characterized some of his recent compositions.

All in all, a pretty fun show to be at with some nice contributions by Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion and Liam Finn. The sound was generally improved from the previous night (no massive power surges probably helped), and the band played energetically throughout.

Here was the complete setlist, as played:

I Love My Label [Nick Lowe]
new song-Dawned On Me (live debut)
A Shot in the Arm
Side With The Seeds
Company In My Back
I’ll Fight
War On War
At Least That’s What You Said
It’s Just That Simple
What Light
Can’t Stand It
new song-Standing O (live debut)
Jesus, etc. (crowd singalong)
Hummingbird
new song-I Might
Box Full Of Letters
Hate It Here
You Never Know (w/Liam Finn on electric guitar and backing vocals)
new song-Born Alone
—————————-
The Late Greats
Heavy Metal Drummer
Passenger Side
California Stars (w/Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion on vocals and tambourine)
Airline To Heaven
Monday>
Outtasite (Outta Mind)>
Hoodoo Voodoo (w/bass-guitar-keyboard tech Josh on cowbell)

Soul legend Syl Johnson, backed by the Sweet Divines, played a well-received set prior to Wilco. And this was his complete setlist:

That’s Why I Love You So
Straight Love, No Chaser
Try Me
Different Strokes
Any Way The Wind Blows
Sock It To Me
Is It Because I’m Black
Same Kind Of Thing
Take Me To The River

Wilco — 6/24/11, North Adams, MA (Mass MoCA)

A passing rainstorm slightly delayed the start of the first of two Wilco sets at this year’s Solid Sound Festival, but a dream end to the show more than made up for the soggy feet and wet clothes.

That dream ending would be Neil Finn coming out for a set-closing version of Split Enz’s classic “I Got You,” that immediately followed Wilco’s “I Got You (At The End of the Century),” thus making a reality of the long-hoped for (at least by my friends and I) “I Got You” medley. Yay!

Anyway, we also got the live debuts of several songs from the forthcoming Wilco record. I definitely liked all of the new songs we heard on first listen, which for me is always a good sign. There was another new song listed on the setlist as the first song of the encore, “Dawned On Me,” but it wound up getting cut, likely for time reasons.

Here was the complete setlist, as played:

—”Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” intro—
new song-I Might (live full-band debut)
Misunderstood
Bull Black Nova
Muzzle of Bees
IATTBYH>
One Wing
Via Chicago
new song-Whole Love (live debut)
Hotel Arizona
Impossible Germany
Shouldn’t Be Ashamed
Handshake Drugs
Radio Cure
new song-Born Alone (live full-band debut)
Poor Places>
Reservations>
Spiders (Kidsmoke)
Walken
I’m The Man Who Loves You
—————–
Red-Eyed and Blue>
I Got You (At The End of the Century)
I Got You [Split Enz] (w/Neil Finn on electric guitar and vocals)

As a bonus, here’s a rough setlist ( I’m guessing at some of the song titles edit: I’m now pretty sure these are the correct song titles) for Neil Finn’s new project with his wife Sharon Finn, The Pajama Club, which essentially opened for Wilco last night:

Can’t Put It Down Until It Ends
These Are Conditions
Dead Leg
Diamonds In Her Eyes>
Go Kart
Golden Child
TNT For Two
The Games We Love To Play
Daylight
From A Friend To A Friend
Tell Me What You Want
Little By Little (w/Glenn Kotche on drums)
